We’ re based in North Yorkshire, which was once a hub of mushroom growing in Britain, so in a way we’ re reviving a lost tradition, but with cutting-edge tech.”
For now, Myco still sources some stems and root balls from the Netherlands, but David sees scope to expand UK vertical farming further.“ The less we import, the smaller the carbon miles; the opportunity for scale is enormous,” David concludes.
“ We’ re a small but rapidly growing company. I’ d like to see turnover hit £ 3.5-million-to- £ 4-million in the next 18 months, and £ 35 million by 2030. Some people tell me to be even more ambitious, but the challenge is scaling responsibly and balancing overheads with demand.”
For a nation of meat-lovers, hybrids like the‘ Save the Earth’ range are healthier and cheaper, but in the race for Net Zero, it could also be a difference maker. ■
