Indeed , since 2012 , Nisbet has utilized its 20,000 square-foot Hawaiian shellfish hatchery to supply oyster larvae and juveniles to Goose Point Oysters for full growth at their farm sites on Willapa Bay , Washington . The hatchery also serves other small farmers in Washington , California , and Alaska . Nisbet developed this business model in response to the escalating ocean acidification in the Pacific Northwest , which has posed challenges to larval growth in local waters . Thus , the company equipped its Hawaiian facility with panels producing 100,000 kWh per year , equivalent to the amount required to power nine homes for a year . The solar panels enable the hatchery to produce 75 percent of its own energy , resulting in the elimination of 170,000 pounds of CO 2 emissions annually . Furthermore , these panels will contribute to powering the water pumping process , drawing water from a nearby saltwater well into the hatchery ’ s tanks for the larvae .
